Aaaaaarrrrrrggggghhh! What is it with me and mp3-players? I've been trying all night to get this thing to work, and I. just. can't. get it to.

I felt a bit worse for wear this morning -- we'd had a so-called 'team event', i.e. dinner and drinks on Jobsworth's company credit card, which had unexpectedly turned out to be quite jolly and fun.

as can be seen from these photographs )

It had gotten quite late, and as soon as I opened my eyes I wanted to close them again, but I reminded myself I had to get into town and exchange my broken 20Gb Creative Zen Touch for a 60Gb Creative Zen Vision:M -- Paul, the sales assistant at Dixons had called while I was in Coventry to tell me his quest for a 30Gb replacement had utterly failed, and offered to trade in my old, useless mp3-player for the 60Gb alternative instead if I would just agree to pay the difference. This was a far better offer than the one I'd received from Creative themselves, who had offered to send out a refurbished 30Gb model at a cost of 135 euros, so I'd jumped at it...and I am now in proud possession of a brand new mp4-player with room for 15,000 songs or lots of videos. The price? One knackered Creative Zen Touch and 46 euros 49.

To celebrate my good fortune, I bought a pair of very cute black velvet shorts, perfect for the holidays, and an adorable pair of black leather pumps with a little pink ribbon & bow:

Woe is me

As if it isn't enough that CoRo and David Berkeley have changed their venues in virtually every city they'll visit on their European minitour, after I've taken such care to find and book hotels close to their previous but now cancelled venues...

Without warning, my Creative Zen Touch 20Gb gave up the ghost today. I've tried rebooting it, reloading the firmware to it, and finally in desperation reformatting it, but it just. won't. work. So I sought to replace it, only to find that it's been discontinued, and has been replaced in all the shops (high street as well as online ones) by 1-8Gb HDD mp3-players...or 20Gb mediaplayers, to which you can download photos and videos. But I don't want photo and\or video functionality! I just want a 20, or better yet, 40Gb mp3-player! Why can't I find one?

Happy post

A year after the fact, and I find out that one of my favourite bands of a decade ago have reformed. Kula Shaker are back in the studio recording their third album -- I wonder if I'll like them again. I'm certainly going to try and find out as soon as it hits the stores.

My Creative Zen Touch replacement arrived in the mail on Friday, and so far, seems to be working like a dream. Although I'm a bit sad that I've only been able to recover 815 of the 4200+ songs in my original playlists (I couldn't do a final backup of my old player before sending it off, as it was unable to retrieve its hard disk; on top of which I've found I've been quite rigorous in deleting mp3 files from my computer in recent months), I'm happy as Larry that starting from tomorrow, I can go back to listening to my favourite tunes while on my daily commute. I have missed doing that the last 2 1/2 weeks, more than I thought I would.

What's going on with SendSpace and YouSendIt tonight? Why should it take 2 hours to upload a single 4MB worth of song? Sod that for a game of soldiers; we'll just do a little game instead. You know the one I mean:

I've been fiddling around with my layout again. The one that looked like it might do late last night, this morning proves completely user-unfriendly, and shan't survive the rest of the day. However, during all my messing about with colours and fonts and backgrounds, I have found out that LJ apparently has a memory for previous layouts; as soon as I select '3-column layout' as default style, it reverts back to my somewhat mournful-looking Ninth Doctor theme and header, complete with custom colour scheme! If all else fails, I could go back to that...but the whole point in me discarding it earlier this month was that I felt it was no longer appropriate -- I haven't really been involved with any particular fandom this year. I do miss it sometimes, the excitement of finding a new fic or fanvid, the looking forward to personal appearances and meeting up with other fans, the sheer indulgence of spending money on it...

Speaking of which, did you know Robin of Sherwood will finally be released on DVD in the US on March 13th, 2007? Just thought I'd mention it.

Of course, looking back on it now, 2006 hasn't been totally devoid of fannish activity on my part: in March and June I saw Depeche Mode on their Playing the Angel Tour (and bought a bag I never use from their official merchandise stand); and in October I followed Common Rotation on their mini-tour of the UK again. All in the company of my very best LJ-friends, too -- what more could anyone wish for?

2006 has also been the Year of the mp3-Player for me: from the moment I acquired it in May till the moment it went and died on me 2 weeks ago, it's not only been my favourite toy, but the one thing that helped keep me sane and keep my spirits up when the daily commute would otherwise have worn me down to nothing. I sent it off to Creative last Friday and they've promised to send me a replacement within the next 10 days, so hopefully I won't have to go back to work with nothing but my book to keep me company on the trains and busses on the way there and back again.

Actually, probably as a direct result of having my Zen with me every day, I haven't read as much as I did before. A mere 27 books have been stored in my bookcase and in my brain this year (or 26, as there was one I found totally unreadable among them):

gamiila: (Default) what's going on here at the moment. My Zen Touch mp3-player appears to have given up the ghost, as it will only start in Recovery Mode, over and over again, and doesn't respond to any of the suggestions as to what course of action to take in the User's Guide, or my prodding it with a pointy stick. I wish I had a more valid reason for being upset, but there it is: I'm upset. And I feel like throwing it to the floor and stomping all over it, but I don't think that's going to help matters any.

ETA 18/12/2006: Well, I guess Creative are stumped for answers as well. They've just offered to replace the hardware!

A day off

When I arrived at the train station this morning, I found that due to a computer malfunction, there'd be no trains in the direction of Amsterdam. We were advised to travel via Utrecht, but, quoth I, "Sod that for a game of soldiers", and turned right round. I put my unexpected holiday to good use, in that I finally took the time to properly acquaint myself with my mp3 player, organising my music files into several playlists, converting all the m4a files on my hard drive to mp3; and somehow managing on top of that to index all my cd-s online as well (at, except for the bunch of classical music cd-s which I have still to sort out. Plus, I made a dent in the mountain of laundry waiting to be ironed.

Anyway, I need to de-nerd for the rest of the weekend, and I think this meme offers the perfect opportunity:

Ask me to take a picture of any aspect of my life that you're interested in/curious about - it can be anything, from the house I live in to my favorite shoes.(ETA: please no, not my favourite shoes again!) Leave your choice here as a comment, and I will reciprocate by taking the pictures and posting them as an LJ entry a reply. That way you get to know a little bit about my life.

...or Mother's Day, whichever you want to call it. I went round to Mum's and naturally, found the rest of the family there too. I had hardly sat down when my 4-year old nephew, carrying a fly-swatter in each hand and explaining that they were swords, challenged me to a duel. For the next few minutes, I didn't let him touch me, and whooped his butt in the process while his mother and brother laughed and told him that for once, he'd picked the wrong person to fight. Didn't he know his aunt could fence?

Of course he didn't. I gave up fencing years ago, and I kind of felt sorry that without really meaning to, I had blocked his every attack; so I got up out of my chair, intending to put a stop to our sparring. Romeo looked around him, uncertain for a moment, then attacked with renewed vigour, and again, I reacted in the same way, blocking his moves and parrying his strokes, all the while easily scoring hit after hit on his little torso and buttocks. I had just decided I would let him get past my defenses on his next try before he got totally humiliated, when I noticed that he had suddenly started to mirror me, dropping into position (though not quite into the proper balance yet) and putting his body behind his fly-swatter arm, thereby presenting much less of a target, before coming at me again. We crossed swatters like this for a few more minutes before I let him hit me in the stomach, after which I made a great show of having been killed ded, and Romeo was cock-a-hoop again. But I've got to hand it to him: the boy shows promise. Maybe we should nurture that.

Now, can anybody tell me: how the devil do I get those mp3-s to download onto my player? You'd think there'd be a chapter in the User's Guide, but no.

New toy

And so I got myself my mp3 player. Yes, the Creative Zen Touch 20GB is mine, all mine! I had to trawl through several shops, but finally, there it was in Dixons behind lock and key. There were others too, in all kind of funky colours and shapes, but I'd set my sights on the Creative, and so had no time for the sales person's pitch. I just pointed to it and said "that one, please - no, don't tell me about it, just get it for me".

Twenty minutes later he emerged from the back of the shop, and apologising said they only had the one on display left. He took it out for me, and I looked it over carefully. I noticed the casing was scratched a little, and remarking that it looked a little battered, handed it back to him. A senior sales person came over, looked at it, and asked if I would agree to a 20% discount. At the till, the young man asked if I'd like a 3-year extended warranty on it as well -- then he rang it up and I got a 20% discount on that too!

I'm not a haggler. I never ask for discounts, much less demand them. To talk of money or haggle over prices makes me extremely uncomfortable, which is why I'm always being overcharged in the Middle East. I had made the remark in all innocence, and hadn't expected them to react with such an offer, but when they did, I felt it would be churlish of me not to accept. So now I have the mp3 player of my choice, but it's a little less shiny than I expected. Oh well, main thing is, it works.

Now all I need, is 5,000 mp3, or 10,000 wma files to download to it.

Trust me to miss out on a bargain. This morning, when thowing out the flyers and folders that somehow made it through my letterbox in the last week or so, my eye caught on the notice that they were having a sale at Electric City, and that the Creative Zen Touch 20GB would be going for a song (or almost, at only 189,99 euros). Up until that moment, I hadn't seriously thought about getting myself an mp3 player, but over the course of the day, I managed to convince myself that I could not live another day without one. The thought that soon, I could go into town and get this shiny new gadget, was all that kept me going through another shitty day at work. All the way to the shop, I felt like I was walking on air.

And now I'm back home, without it. They had sold out.

I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
